Do you like football? And do you like a challenge? The Football Discipleship Training School (Football DTS) is a six month training experience with the central purpose of knowing God and making Him known. To do this we make use of football. The Football DTS contains all the great ingredients of the DTS combined with football. The Football DTS will run together with the Classic DTS.
These twelve weeks of lecture will provide you with the opportunity to grow and learn in many ways. It includes class lectures, small group discussions, football training, assignments, worship and prayer times, (football) evangelism, community life, sports and practical work duties. Speakers from the Netherlands and from abroad will encourage and challenge you to deepen your roots in God through their teaching and testimony.
Following the lecture phase you will go on an outreach to another country in order to put what you’ve learned into practice. Football is a universal language, an international love, and a way to open up doors. God has gifted much of the world in the realm of athleticism, and the Football DTS desires to enable you to use your gifts for God. Outreach is sharing Jesus with people from a country you’ve probably never been to before. The Football DTS is going on outreach to Mozambique.
DTS is not just a training, gap year or bible school, it’s your first step within missions.

The Football DTS is focused on young people with a heart for sports and Jesus. Football is used and integrated within this DTS. The Football DTS runs together with the Classic DTS and often has class together with the Classic DTS. Every week a speaker teaches about different subjects, such as: Father heart of God, Identity, Missions, Evangelism, The Cross, etc. Also you live and learn with each other. Besides that you get a mentor who will walk along with you. Of course there will be football and outreaches with football. The students come from international and national background. On the DTS we have a live-learn environment. This means that we live with each other on our location ‘Licht in ‘t Duuster’.
After the lecture phase we’re going on outreach for 11 weeks. Here we’ll visit different places where we will work together with churches and other organizations. Of course football plays a important role. We’ll probably work together with an organization which, just like us, wants to reach people with the gospel through football.
Football is a great tool to reach people. Not only is it very popular but also we see that football connects and gathers people. Football is a great tool to make God known.
Since it’s the first time a Football DTS is been held at Heidebeek there are no testimonies yet from Football DTS students. We did put some testimonies here from students from the Classic DTS.

“The Holy Spirit inspired the conversation”
“During my outreach to Brazil I saw like never before in my life that God is a Light in the darkness. Towards the end of our three month outreach we went to do evangelism for 4 nights during carnival in Ouro Preto. As a team we had to choose to go for it and to give everything once again as it would be a period with a busy program and not so much sleep. After making that choice, we went on the street that night with three hundred other enthusiastic Christians. My friend and I asked God if He could to send English speaking people to us. Sure enough ten minutes later there were three English speaking guys who came to us. When we began to speek about faith in God, the Holy Spirit inspired the conversation. He gave us the words so we could answer their questions. God was at work! When we told them that they also could make a choice for God, they became enthusiastic. Shortly thereafter, they made their choice. Yes, three other people who can work in Gods Kingdom!”
Celina Dekker about her DTS
“My relationship with God was turned upside down and has only gotten much better.”
“During DTS I got to know God much more as a personal God. Through the lectures, my fellow students and my time with God I learned that I can pray anytime for anything and that He always listens. I also learned and experienced that I can hear God’s voice. On top of that I learned to open myself up to others. It’s just as important for me as it is for others when I share what is really in my heart. DTS was a great time where my relationship with God was turned upside down and has only gotten much better.”

“DTS changed my life”
“DTS changed my life and gave me a strong foundation for the future. God is in everything and will lead everything. Before DTS I couldn’t say this with assurance. Now, looking back, I can say it -God is at work in my life. Through my time in Brazil, where I went for outreach, I saw that God works through me and the things that I do, think and feel. He gives me strength when I face a challenge, for example preaching. He comforts me in difficult times and He puts desires in my heart and builds my character.
During the outreach I saw through all the activities, events, people and my team members that God works through everyone and everything.
You can see Him in every little detail -for example the smile of a little child I played soccer with. But also in the big things, like the many people who came to Christ during Carnival.

“ As a faithful father He provided every time again in what we, His children, needed.”
“As a young married couple we were excited to do a DTS. Before hand we saw some disadvantages: less time with each other, during outreach a lack of private places and dividing time between God, each other and the group. But we discovered that God is so good! As a faithful father He provided every time again in what we, His children, needed.
That’s why we want to encourage other young married couples to take this challenge together with God and each other. We experienced that as we took this step God came through and blessed it tremendously. God has made us stronger as a couple.”
“Now I’m home I see how much I’ve learned. I discovered that I really changed. It was a great time and I enjoyed this time so much. Esspecially living together at LID (Licht in ’t Duuster, the place where you stay) I still miss. I miss the good conversations on every possible time on every possible place. And Heidebeek: since the first moment I walked on the property I felt at home. At the lecture phase there was very good teaching where I was confronted with things because things came so close or were very new. The area of Heidebeek is surrounded with forest which I spend a lot of time at.
I learned a very important lesson in these 6 months: I had a certain image about God. I really wanted God to be close to me and have a real relationship with Him but sometimes it seemed that it just didn’t work out. It was a process where I had to learn to trust God, let things go from my past and forgive people. In this God constantly showed me that He was my Fahter and He loved me and He always will love me. That feels as such a relief and because of that I also dare to step out. Now I rely more on what God says who I am and that does make big difference.”
“De DTS was super cool! First I thought ‘nice’, 3 months to a foreign country, that’s cool! But also the lecture phase was really good and fun. I learned so much about God and myself. Sometimes it’s really confronting but it’s so good to see that everybody is helping you in your process. I was challenged to do things I otherwise wouldn’t dare to do. I grow more mature and became more secure about myself because I know who God is and I also got to know myself better. I thought I knew God but in the end it turned out that God was way different then I thought He was. He’s so amazing.
On outreach we went to Indonesia, a muslim country. We couldn’t tell about Jesus to everybody but people did see that we, as Christians, helped them. We laughed with them and listened to them. We did a lot of children work and we did a lot of house visits where we listened to people’s stories and afterwards we often could pray for people. You can’t change their life directly but you can pray for people. If we prayed for people I got enthusiastic about God myself as well even though sometimes we also had to persevere. The culture and climate are so different. I also have been sick on outreach but I can see that God really helped me through and kept me positive. Because I have seen that God cares for me, also in a period of sickness, I want to do what He says and go for Him. I don’t want to have another goal anymore.”
“DTS was so great! I would suggest it to everybody. I could tell way more about it but these are things I have learned. God is calling, also for you!”
A Discipleship Training School is a life shaping and direction altering experience! God’s presence in both challenge and encouragement is tangible and inspiring. The context that this happens in is so important. Great speakers, great atmosphere and a staff team that takes the journey with you. These are all areas where Heidebeek shines out. It was (and is) a fantastic place to draw near to God, be encouraged in your missions vision, and learn what it means to live for Jesus. The support of the whole Heidebeek community contributes to the experience in a special way!

I had the privilege to teach for many years in different DTS’s at Heidebeek, which I enjoyed a lot. There is a nice, open, lovely and hospitable atmosphere in the school. Because I always was very positive and passionate about Heidebeek, both of my daughters did their DTS there. It’s been a life-changing experience for them both. That’s why I recommend the DTS at Heidebeek.
Pastor Shelter Haarlem, The Netherlands
Having taught in Discipleship Training Schools (DTS) for almost 30 years, I’ve witnessed firsthand what God can do in the lives of hungry hearts. I’ve seen young and old transformed by the power of God, by His revelation and by the work of the Holy Spirit. Months spent away from home seeking God often in a cross culture environment is a huge challenge, an amazing step of faith and can be quite a sacrifice. But our Heavenly Father does not disappoint. When Jesus touches lives, those lives are never the same.
My significant time spent at YWAM, Heidebeek has proven to me time and time again that this is a special place with a special team of leaders and staff. They are fully devoted to the discipleship of DTS students. I highly recommend Heidebeek as a perfect choice for a DTS. Their attention to detail and organization makes for a wonderful experience. But it is their passion for the Lord that is truly contagious and filters down into every aspect of the DTS. And as a bonus the Dutch culture is exciting and the beauty of Holland is breath taking.
Please pray specifically about YWAM Heidebeek as your destination for a DTS.
YWAM / DTS Speaker
Johan and I did our DTS on Heidebeek back in 1980 and it completely turned our lives upside down. We learned a lot from as well lectures in the classroom (from great international speakers), but also outside of the classroom. We learned from experienced missionaries and were taken by the hand and challenged to obey God. That was only the start of our 32 years within YWAM. We are truly privileged to be a part of the YWAM family worldwide and we really advice you to pray to follow a DTS at YWAM Heidebeek. To get to know God (better) and make Him known!
